  • This beautiful historic church took a great deal of work to build. Before the cathedral was built, two churches had already stood there, one built in 1681 and one built in 1720. This current cathedral was planned in 1842, when the Diocese of Antigua was created. The cathedral planned to celebrate this elevation was damaged by an earthquake in 1843. Nevertheless the first Bishop of Antigua was enthroned in it. Eventually, the cathedral that survives today was built. It is a “building within a building” because the interior is of pitch pine and built to survive an earthquake the outer stone might crumble during. This is an impressive and imposing church, a sight for all visitors to see.
